Project64 was made by zilmar and its plugins were programmed mostly by Jabo.  It lacks a couple important features for now, but its next version will be a great improvement.  You can also have access to all of their beta versions (including their current progress on the emulator) by making a donation.

The emulator is still alive, and the Project64 team is currently working on an eighth release of this emulator, Project64 1.7, which is going to be a tremendous improvement in emulator features over Project64 1.6, though I don't think it will really beat the purpose of using other emulators to fix emulation issues as much as most people believe it will.  For more information, view Project64's website.

The graphics plugin is a good chunk of why Project64 is such a good emulator.  It doesn't have as much to configure as Rice's Video Plugin, but is simplistic and usually emulates most games very well.  Jabo's DirectSound is the only audio plugin, other than the even better audio plugin used by the Nemu64 emulator, that has the ability to record WAV sound files from running Nintendo 64 ROMs.  Other than that, it doesn't have an edge over Azimer's latest audio plugin that I can see, except Jabo's also does have a sometimes useful volume control option and a smaller and more compact configuration dialoge window.  Azimer's latest audio plugin, however, does have an edge over Jabo's DirectSound:  When the Sync Game to Audio option is not checked for either plugin, Azimer's sounds better.  For some games like TWINE and Ms. Pac-Man:  Maze Madness, the Sync Game to Audio option is a bad option to have enabled.  As for Project64's input plugin, there are better input plugins, like N64 VirtualPad and N-Rage's DirectInput.  Finally, Project64's RSP plugin, made by both Jabo and zilmar, is also very good, though Hacktarux claims that its only edge over his RSP plugin used by Mupen64 is better sound.
